Wine tasting in Provence

General information about provence wine

The Wines of Côtes De Povençe, the region that stretches from Flayosc to Saint-Raphael to Toulon is the oldest wine growing area in France. Wine has been produced in Aups and Draguignan for over 2 600 years.

It is divded into five regions:

  • The cost from Toulon to Saint-Raphaël
  • The vally to the north Saint-Raphaël from Toulon to Frejus
  • The Haut Pays to the north of Le Luc to Flayosc
  • The basin of Le Beausset between Cassis and Bandol
  • The Massif Sainte-Victoire

70% of the wine produced in this region is Rose. Chaptalization, a common technique used to increase the final alcoholic strength of a wine by adding sugar, is not allowed in the Côtes de Provençe. This is because the grapes from this region enjoy up to 320 days of sunshine a year. the wines are characterized by a natural ripness and a very powerful aroma.

Useful information about wine

Appellation d'Origine Controlee - AOC

These are subject to a government order which defines the area in which they are grown, the type of grapes used, the maximum permitted production, the minimum alcohol content and the methods of cultivation and production. Among these there are, of course, the very great (and expensive) wines but there are also plenty to be found at reasonable prices. Prices that are much less than you would pay for a table wine in the UK.
